Was Goliath Really a Giant?

The phrase “David and Goliath” is a popular phrase denoting an underdog situation, a contest wherein a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary. But was Goliath really a giant man? The Bible says he was. In fact, he belonged to a race of giants that had six fingers and six toes. He is said to have been 9 feet, 9 inches tall. Giants were probably the mutant (unnatural) offspring of the fallen angels who had unlawful sexual relations with the daughters of men (See Genesis 6:4).

You can read the entire narrative in 1 Samuel 17.

  • The Israelites and Philistines face each other; Goliath makes his challenge to single combat
  • David volunteers to fight Goliath
  • David selects five smooth stones from a creek-bed to be used in his sling
  • David defeats Goliath and cuts off Goliath’s head.
  • The Philistines flee the battlefield. The armies of Israel chase after them and defeat them in battle.
  • The name of Yahweh, Israel’s God, is designated as “all-powerful” and given the glory.

We recommend you read the entire story in 1 Samuel 17 (https://biblehub.com/bsb/1_samuel/17.htm)

This Bible passage will encourage you to allow your faith in God to triumph over any obstacles or “giants” you may be facing in your life. Our God is faithful to keep His promises and give His children victory in every circumstance.
